Alphonse GIROUX - Lot 209
Alphonse GIROUX Onyx bowl with a gilded bronze base decorated with polychrome cloisonné enamel; the handles are held in place by a lion’s head. Signed on the underside. (Onyx chipped in places) Height: 10.6 cm Note: Founded in Paris at the end of the 18th century, the Alphonse Giroux & Cie firm was one of the most prestigious haberdashers and manufacturers of luxury goods in the 19th century. As the official supplier to the court of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, it specialized in objets d’art inspired by historical styles and the arts of the East. Featured at the World’s Fairs of 1855, 1867, and 1878, the firm distinguished itself notably through its creations combining onyx, gilded bronze, and cloisonné enamel—materials particularly prized during the Second Empire. Today, works by Alphonse Giroux are sought-after examples of the eclectic Parisian taste of the second half of the 19th century.
