Note: Charles Masson (1822–1894) trained in the studio of François Rude, one of the great masters of French Romantic sculpture. He exhibited at the Salon beginning in 1861 and specialized in animal subjects, a field then dominated by Barye and Mène. His works are now held notably at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon, his master’s hometown, as well as in several French public collections. His small bronze cat sculptures are among the most characteristic examples of his work, prized for their careful observation of feline behavior.
