MEISSEN - Lot 213
MEISSEN
Polychrome porcelain group depicting an allegory of painting.
Marked with two crossed swords on the reverse.
Label reading "bronzes d'art / Oudin / Marseille" on the reverse.
(restored)
Height: 19 cm
Note: Founded in 1710 during the reign of Augustus the Strong, the Meissen manufactory was the first in Europe to master the secret of hard-paste porcelain. Allegorical groups representing the arts—painting, sculpture, music, or architecture—are among the most iconic models of 18th-century Saxony, widely distributed and reissued by the manufactory. The label from the Oudin house in Marseille, meanwhile, recalls the business of this merchant specializing in art bronzes, porcelain, and luxury items, who helped distribute prestigious German and French products to southern clientele in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
