Free valuation of Marc Chagall artwork – Sale & Expertise in Saint-Paul de Vence

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) is universally recognized as one of the most poetic and visionary artists of the 20th century. Born in Vitebsk, then part of the Russian Empire (now Belarus), into a devout Hassidic Jewish family, Chagall began his artistic education locally before studying classical drawing in Saint Petersburg. In 1910, he moved to Paris, the epicenter of avant-garde art, where he encountered the work of Picasso, Delaunay, and the Surrealists.

Yet Chagall remained stylistically independent, creating a dreamlike world of floating figures, folkloric scenes, and symbolic animals, infused with rich color and spiritual lyricism. As art historian Catherine Chevillot observed, “Chagall created a deeply personal visual language, where memory, dreams, and spirituality dance in an unmatched chromatic harmony.”¹

His work spans a remarkable range of techniques: oil painting, watercolor, gouache, lithography, etching, ceramics, and monumental stained glass windows. He played a pioneering role in elevating original lithographs to the rank of collectible fine art. After fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe and spending the war years in the United States, Chagall returned to France in 1948. In 1966, he settled permanently in Saint-Paul de Vence, a medieval hilltop village on the French Riviera, known for its artistic legacy and proximity to the Maeght Foundation—an institution founded by his close friends Aimé and Marguerite Maeght.

Saint-Paul de Vence offered Chagall a serene and inspirational environment in which to work until his death in 1985. He is buried in the village cemetery, a testament to the deep and eternal bond between the artist and this region. Selling a Chagall piece in Saint-Paul de Vence is therefore more than a financial act—it is a tribute to his legacy in the very place he called home.
