Henri Matisse: A master of colour rooted in the french riviera
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) remains one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, celebrated for his bold use of colour, liberated compositions, and unparalleled understanding of light. Born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France, he discovered painting during a convalescence and later trained in Paris, notably in Gustave Moreau’s studio. Soon, he emerged as the leader of Fauvism – a movement that broke with academic tradition through the expressive, unblended use of colour.
After travelling widely – Algeria, Tahiti, New York – Matisse found on the French Riviera the perfect setting for his art. In 1943, he settled in Vence, in the villa Le Rêve, which he described as “a refuge of light and greenery.” It was here that he created his famous cut-out gouaches, vibrant lithographs, and paintings in which the Mediterranean light became a subject in its own right. As he told André Verdet, “Here, the sun gives me not shadows, but colours.”
In Vence, Matisse also conceived the extraordinary Chapelle du Rosaire (1948–1951), which he considered “the culmination” of his career. While he rests today in Nice, the memory of his years in Vence continues to enrich the region’s cultural and artistic identity.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence, just minutes from Matisse’s former home, remains a thriving hub for modern art. Here, Matisse’s legacy is alive – collectors, art lovers, and dealers seek works that carry the soul of the Mediterranean.
