LEWITT Sol (1928-2007) - Lot 82
LEWITT Sol (1928-2007) Rip Drawing - R39, March 1972. Signed, numbered and dated lower right. 22.5 x 54.5 cm Provenance: Yvon Lambert -Yvon Lambert Collection -Galerie 1900-2000 -Private collection Note : Lot 82 of our sale bears witness to a more confidential production by the artist: the "Papiers Pliés et Déchirés" or "Folds and Rips" series, part of a limited series of works on paper produced at the start of his career between 1966 and 1980. Through the works in this series, he completely reformed the notion of drawing and renewed the creative act: the work is created from a gesture by the artist, who folds or tears the sheet of paper. In 1969, he began to produce Folds, i.e. folded works, followed in 1971 by Rips, i.e. torn works. In an essay on this series, published in 2020, Dieter Schwarz examines the process, highlighting the notion of "drawing without drawing". Our work is one of the Rips and consists of a white sheet torn into three parts, then laminated. As usual for this series, the artist has given it a reference and dated it: R39 - March 1972. These drawings were often offered by the artist to his friends and gallery owners, and circulated in a fairly restricted, private circle, as evidenced by our lot from the Yvon Lambert collection. A major collector, Yvon Lambert opened his gallery in Paris in the early 1960s and exhibited the artist Sol LeWitt from 1970, pioneering the promotion of Conceptual and Minimalist art in France. In 2000, he opened the Collection Lambert in Avignon, followed in 2012 by a major gift from the collector to the French state, which includes numerous works by Sol LeWitt, both his geometric gouaches and two wall drawings.
