KARL GRIESBAUM (1872–1941) Collection, attributed to - Lot 210
KARL GRIESBAUM (1872–1941) Collection, attributed to 800° silver songbird box decorated with leaf arabesques. Opening knob adorned with a bird. (does not work, mechanism needs servicing, bird is plucked) 3.6 x 10.3 x 6.4 cm Note: Based in Triberg, in the heart of the German Black Forest, Karl Griesbaum (1872–1941) began producing singing bird boxes in the early 20th century, inspired by the famous Swiss automata of the 18th century. His creations combine goldsmithing with mechanical ingenuity: when opened, a tiny articulated bird appears, spins around, flaps its wings, opens its beak, and sings thanks to a mechanism featuring bellows and miniaturized whistles. A supplier to numerous luxury houses and exported worldwide, Griesbaum boxes remain today the benchmark for 20th-century singing bird automata. Exemplars that retain their original mechanisms are particularly sought after by collectors of mechanical music and curiosities.
