DUFY Raoul (1877-1953) - Lot 16
DUFY Raoul (1877-1953) Décor for the Monte-Carlo Palm Beach ballet. Lithograph. Signed and dated 1933 in the plate. Numbered 127/200 in pencil lower right. (fold marks, yellowed leaf, worn frame) View: 48 x 62.5 cm (frame: 70.5 x 84 cm) Note: This lithograph reproduces the stage curtain designed by Raoul Dufy for the ballet Palm Beach, created in 1933 by the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo to choreography by Léonide Massine and music by Jean Françaix. Commissioned by Count Étienne de Beaumont, this work was part of Dufy's extensive decorating activity for theater and ballet, following in the footsteps of such emblematic productions as Jean Cocteau's Le Boeuf sur le toit. It also testifies to the major role played by the Riviera in the renewal of the performing arts between the wars.
