Note: So-called Coromandel lacquerware ranks among the most prestigious productions of 17th- and 18th-century China. Intended for export to Europe as well as for grand Chinese residences, they are made using the kuan cai technique, which involves deeply incising several layers of lacquer before enhancing them with polychrome. Large-scale designs featuring figures, palaces, and court scenes constitute one of the most prized motifs of this tradition, highly sought after by collectors of Far Eastern furniture and art.
